Papa Doble - The Real Hemingway Daiquiri - Truth and fiction!
Even if you haven’t read any of Ernest Hemingway’s fiction, you’re likely to have heard of the cocktails he inspired while frequenting bars. There are numerous tales of Ernest Hemingway chatting with the bartender over drinks, leading to the creation of his famous cocktail recipes. These stories, spanning the early 1900s, echo the quote ‘There are two kinds of stories, the one you live, and the one you make up. And nobody knows the difference, and I don’t ever tell which is which.’ In today’s world, we will never really know the exact drinks and recipes Ernest Hemingway inspired. But this is how Ernest Hemingway lived his life, and this is exactly what we love about all famous writers and great fiction tellers. So, let’s entertain ourselves for a moment. We’re all aware that Ernest Hemingway loved daiquiris, especially those served at Floridita, a famous bar and restaurant in Havana, Cuba. Surrounded by the smoke of Habana cigars, Ernest Hemingway spent the 1930s at Floridita, sipping his favorite drink, the daiquiri. The daiquiris served at Floridita were famously sweetened with sugar cane. Ernest Hemingway was well aware that sugar and alcohol both have a lot in common. They both cause dehydration and they are both processed through the liver. These commonalities mean that when combined, sugary, alcoholic drinks produce a much more severe hangover than alcohol alone. Ernest Hemingway enjoyed drinking and often indulged in more than one daiquiri while seated at the bar. Ernest Hemingway fine-tuned the drink with the bartender to his needs, by simply cutting the sugar and doubling the amount of rum. The first Papa Doble was created! And as the Papa Doble was created to drink many more than just one, the Papa Doble was served wrapped in a paper towel to ensure the glass doesn’t slip through the fingers after having a few.
The story may be true, or it may be fiction. The Simple Papa Doble is a great drink for any rum lover, using a high-quality rum. But for most people, this very simple version of the Papa Doble may not be the most amazing drink ever created. Me personally love the story and the way the drink was served. Just give it a try and see how you like it.
