Why do I adore rum? It’s not just about the taste—though that’s a big part of it. For me, rum represents a journey, starting in the sugarcane fields and winding through the hands of skilled artisans, transforming simple ingredients into premium spirits. This journey is deeply connected to rum history, rum culture, and tradition. While other spirits like gin and tequila have their allure, rum speaks to me personally.
Rum production is authentic, rooted in the Caribbean and Central America, where each region tells its own story through its rum. In Cuba, for example, rum is light and smooth, playing a key role in famous Cuban cocktails like the Mojito and Daiquiri. Visiting Havana Club distilleries revealed the craft of traditional rum-making, where aging and precision shine.
Jamaica's bold, flavorful rums capture the island’s spirit, and Jamaican rum is not just a drink but a way of life. At Appleton Estate, I learned about the intricate pot still process that creates these complex, aromatic rums.
Puerto Rican rum dominates global cocktail culture with drinks like the Piña Colada and the Rum Sidecar. A tour of Bacardi introduced me to the smooth, versatile rums that have shaped the cocktail world.
The Art of Making Rum
Rum begins with sugarcane or molasses, but the true magic happens in the transformation into a rich, full-bodied spirit. After fermentation, the liquid (called "wash") is distilled in either pot stills or column stills, shaping the final flavor profile.
Aging rum in oak barrels brings out complex notes like vanilla, spice, and caramel. The environmental conditions—temperature and humidity—play key roles in developing the distinctive character of aged rum.
Rum in Cocktail Culture
Rum’s versatility makes it the foundation of classic cocktails. Whether you enjoy a refreshing Mojito, a smooth Rum Sidecar, or the tropical delight of a classic Piña Colada, rum delivers a depth of flavor unmatched by other spirits.
The Mojito—with rum, mint, and lime—is a summer favorite. The Rum Sidecar adds a tropical twist to the classic cocktail, while the Piña Colada transports you to the beaches of the Caribbean.
Why Rum Matters to Me
For me, rum is more than a drink; it’s a connection to history, culture, and tradition. Whether sipping a fine Puerto Rican rum like Don Q Reserva or celebrating with Ron Zacapa, I appreciate the craftsmanship in every bottle.
When making cocktails at home, I often reach for Ron Botran Blanco, a versatile rum ideal for a refreshing Mojito or a simple rum punch. No matter the occasion, rum makes every moment unforgettable.
